Fame (2009)

Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating

At New York's High School of Performing Arts, students from all walks of life get the chance to hone their skills as singers, actors, dancers, and more. Over four years, these young men and women will see if they truly have the dedication and talent to achieve success, while still juggling regular schoolwork, feelings of self-doubt, and budding romances.

The Quartile Take

The 2009 Fame remake adds little to justify its existence alongside the beloved 1980 original. The plot is a fragmented collection of student vignettes that never coalesce into a compelling narrative, spreading itself too thin across too many characters to build meaningful emotional investment. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with a young cast that lacks the raw energy of the original. Cinematography is glossy and generic, typical of late-2000s musical productions. Novelty scores very low — this is a straightforward remake that softens the gritty, socially conscious edge of the original in favor of a sanitized, crowd-pleasing formula, offering nothing distinctive in conception or execution. The ending feels rushed and unearned, failing to deliver the cathartic payoff the story builds toward.
