An Oscar-winning writer in a slump leaves Hollywood to teach screenwriting at a college on the East Coast, where he falls for a single mom taking classes there.
The Rewrite is a formulaic romantic comedy that hits familiar beats: the disillusioned creative genius rediscovers his passion through teaching and an unlikely romance. Hugh Grant brings his signature charm and self-deprecating wit, elevating the material above its script, and Marisa Tomei is warm and appealing as the love interest. The cinematography is unremarkable, functional at best, and the plot offers little surprise — the arc is entirely predictable from the opening scene. The ending resolves things neatly and satisfyingly within genre expectations, but without any particular distinction. Novelty is low as the fish-out-of-water academic rom-com is well-worn territory and the film does little to distinguish itself beyond its leads.
