When an accomplished pianist is diagnosed with the devastating and incurable disease ALS, she hires a directionless young woman who becomes her full-time caregiver. Complete opposites, the strangers form a life-changing bond inspiring each other to live life to fullest, while being brought together by the most challenging of circumstances.
You're Not You is a well-acted disease drama anchored by strong performances from Hilary Swank and Emmy Rossum, whose chemistry elevates familiar material. Swank brings genuine dignity and emotional depth to her ALS-stricken pianist, making the illness feel personal rather than exploitative. However, the film treads well-worn territory in the caregiver-patient bonding subgenre, following a predictable arc of opposites-attract friendship with few narrative surprises. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, offering little visual distinction. The ending is emotionally affecting but telegraphed well in advance, leaning on genre conventions rather than subverting them.
