Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Barry is a talented mechanic and family man whose life is torn apart on the eve of a zombie apocalypse. His sister, Brooke, is kidnapped by a sinister team of gas-mask wearing soldiers and experimented on by a psychotic doctor. While Brooke plans her escape Barry goes out on the road to find her and teams up with Benny, a fellow survivor – together they must arm themselves and prepare to battle their way through hordes of flesh-eating monsters in a harsh Australian bushland.

The Quartile Take

Wyrmwood earns genuine novelty points for its distinctly Australian Mad Max-meets-zombie-apocalypse mashup, with creative worldbuilding (zombies as fuel source) and a grimy, inventive aesthetic that sets it apart from the crowded zombie genre. The cinematography captures the harsh Australian bushland with kinetic energy and style on a low budget. Acting is serviceable with some standout moments, particularly from the leads. However, the plot is fairly thin and episodic, struggling to sustain momentum across its runtime, and the ending feels rushed and undercooked, failing to pay off the setup adequately.
