Lou Clark, a directionless 26-year-old from the English countryside, takes a job at the local castle as a caregiver and companion to a wealthy young banker, Will Traynor. Wheelchair-bound from an accident two years prior, the once adventurous Will has all but given up — that is until Lou determines to show him that life is worth living.

The Quartile Take

Me Before You is a competently crafted romantic drama elevated significantly by its two leads. Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin share genuine chemistry and deliver emotionally resonant performances that carry the film well beyond its somewhat formulaic premise. The plot follows a fairly predictable emotional arc drawn from its source novel, hitting expected beats of the 'opposites drawn together' romance template, though the handling of disability and assisted dying adds some moral complexity. Cinematography is pleasant and makes good use of the English countryside setting without being especially distinctive. The ending generated significant controversy and emotional impact, landing powerfully for many viewers even if its thematic implications remain debated. Novelty is the weakest dimension — the basic setup is a well-worn caregiver romance, and while the assisted dying angle adds weight, the film doesn't push its craft or voice into truly singular territory.
