The Gallows (2015)

Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating

20 years after a horrific accident during a small town school play, students at the school resurrect the failed show in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy - but soon discover that some things are better left alone.

The Quartile Take

The Gallows is a found-footage horror that recycles well-worn genre tropes without distinguishing itself in any meaningful way. The school-play-turned-supernatural-nightmare premise had potential but is squandered by thin characters, predictable scares, and a twist ending that feels more confusing than satisfying. The acting is amateurish even by found-footage standards, and the cinematography — shaky handheld footage in dark corridors — offers nothing beyond the genre minimum. The gallows motif is underutilized, and the film's novelty is essentially zero, borrowing heavily from Paranormal Activity and similar low-budget found-footage entries without adding a distinctive voice or craft.
