The 5th Wave (2016)

16-year-old Cassie Sullivan tries to survive in a world devastated by the waves of an alien invasion that has already decimated the population and knocked mankind back to the Stone Age.

The Quartile Take

The 5th Wave is a fairly generic YA dystopian adaptation that fails to distinguish itself from the crowded genre. The plot recycles familiar alien invasion and chosen-one tropes without adding meaningful depth, and the narrative splits awkwardly between storylines. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with Chloë Grace Moretz doing competent work in an underdeveloped role. Cinematography is adequately polished with some decent action sequences but nothing visually memorable. Novelty is low as it follows the YA dystopia formula closely without a distinctive voice or fresh angle. The ending is unsatisfying, clearly designed to set up sequels that never materialized, leaving the story feeling incomplete and unresolved.
