Leatherface (2017)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

A young nurse is kidnapped by a group of violent teens who escape from a mental hospital and take her on the road trip from hell. Pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge, one of the teens is destined for tragedy and horrors that will destroy his mind, moulding him into a monster named Leatherface.

The Quartile Take

This Texas Chain Saw Massacre prequel follows a predictable origin-story formula that adds little to the mythology. The road-trip-from-hell premise is serviceable but derivative, with underdeveloped characters and a twist that telegraphs itself early. Acting is generally weak across the board, with only Stephen Dorff and Lili Taylor providing moments of credibility. The cinematography is competent for a modern horror entry — directors Bustillo and Maury bring some gritty European sensibility — but the film never fully escapes its low-budget, direct-to-VOD feel. As a prequel to an iconic franchise, it offers minimal novelty, recycling familiar slasher and road-movie tropes without meaningful reinvention. The ending attempts a dark dramatic payoff but feels rushed and unearned.
