Maria Altmann, an octogenarian Jewish refugee, takes on the government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her family.
Woman in Gold is a competent and emotionally engaging courtroom drama anchored by Helen Mirren's commanding performance as Maria Altmann, with Ryan Reynolds providing solid support. The true story of reclaiming Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I from the Austrian government gives the film genuine weight and historical resonance. However, the narrative structure is fairly conventional — alternating wartime flashbacks with present-day legal proceedings — and rarely transcends its prestige-drama template. The cinematography is polished but unremarkable. The ending satisfies emotionally given the real-world outcome, but feels somewhat foregone. Its distinctiveness comes primarily from its true story and subject matter rather than any singular filmmaking vision.
