Creed (2015)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

The former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa serves as a trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed.

The Quartile Take

Creed is a strong sports drama elevated significantly by its performances—Michael B. Jordan is magnetic and Sylvester Stallone delivers arguably his finest dramatic work in decades, earning an Oscar nomination. Ryan Coogler's direction brings kinetic, visceral cinematography, particularly the celebrated single-take boxing sequence that is genuinely exceptional filmmaking. The plot follows familiar Rocky-formula beats (underdog rises, big fight, emotional redemption arc) and doesn't subvert expectations, keeping Novelty and Plot from reaching the top tier. The ending is satisfying and emotionally resonant but ultimately conventional for the genre, landing a moral victory rather than a surprising one. A worthy, well-crafted continuation of a beloved franchise rather than a reinvention of it.
