The Hallow (2015)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Deep within the darkness of secluded forest land in rural Ireland dwells an ancient evil. Feared by the nearby superstitious villagers as cursed creatures who prey upon the lost, their secrets have been kept from civilization and remain on their hallowed ground. But when a conservationist from London moves in with his wife and infant child in order to survey the land for future construction, his actions unwittingly disturb the horde of demonic forces. Alone in a remote wilderness, he must now ensure his family's survival from their relentless attacks.

The Quartile Take

The Hallow is a serviceable but uneven folk horror entry that draws heavily on Irish changeling mythology and creature-feature conventions. The woodland cinematography is atmospheric and the creature design shows genuine craft, but the film struggles to fully exploit its rich folkloric premise — the plot defaults to fairly standard siege-horror mechanics once the creatures appear. Acting is competent, particularly from Joseph Mawle, though character development is thin. The ending feels rushed and somewhat unsatisfying given the dread built up earlier. Its use of Irish folklore and practical creature effects give it modest distinctiveness within the genre, but it doesn't transcend its B-movie framework enough to stand truly apart.
