Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating
A punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing an act of violence at a skinhead bar.
Green Room is a taut, merciless siege thriller elevated primarily by its exceptional cast — Patrick Stewart's cold, understated menace is a career highlight, and the young ensemble brings raw authenticity. The plot is lean and functional, delivering relentless tension without much depth or subversion beyond its premise. Cinematography is competent and grimy, fitting the claustrophobic setting without being visually distinctive. The novelty lies in its specific punk-versus-neo-Nazi milieu and Jeremy Saulnier's unflinching, unglamourized approach to violence, which feels fresh without being wholly singular. The ending is brutal and satisfying in its bleak logic but doesn't transcend the genre. A very solid, above-average thriller that excels most in performance.
