Margherita, a director in the middle of an existential crisis, has to deal with the inevitable and still unacceptable loss of her mother.
Nanni Moretti's semi-autobiographical drama is a quiet, emotionally precise work. The acting is the clear standout — Margherita Buy delivers a nuanced, internalized performance, and John Turturro brings unexpected warmth and comic relief as the mercurial American actor. The film weaves grief, professional anxiety, and memory with a delicate touch, though the narrative itself is modest and somewhat meandering. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable. While Moretti's voice is recognizable, the film doesn't reach the singular distinctiveness of his best work. The ending is understated and earned without being particularly memorable.
