What Happened, Miss Simone? benefits enormously from extraordinary archival footage and Nina Simone's own magnetic, unfiltered presence — her interviews and performances carry the film's emotional weight, effectively replacing traditional 'acting' with raw authenticity from the subject herself. The documentary structure is fairly conventional for a music biography, moving chronologically through her life with talking-head interviews and archive clips, which limits its cinematographic and narrative ambition. The story it tells is genuinely singular — Simone's life as child prodigy, civil rights firebrand, abuse survivor, and exile is remarkable — but the filmmaking approach doesn't fully match the singularity of its subject. The ending lands with appropriate weight given Simone's complicated legacy and late-life reconciliation with her daughter, though it doesn't transcend the genre's expected emotional resolution.
