Return (2015)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A tale of terror. Cathy Reed has been institutionalized most of her life because of Schizophrenia, as a child her parents thought she was possessed by demons and had her exercised by priests. Medical science saw different. Now decades later Cathy is freed, relocated to her own flat and given a chance to be independent. Once alone things are not what they all seem and when her nightmares turn real she questions her state of mind before she is left to face her demons.

The Quartile Take

Return (2015) is a modest psychological horror-drama that follows familiar territory—an institutionalized woman confronting whether her terrors are supernatural or delusions. The plot treads well-worn ground blending mental illness with ambiguous supernatural threat, offering little fresh perspective on the premise. Acting appears serviceable and carries the film through its quieter dramatic moments. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, lacking distinctive visual flair. Novelty is low given how closely it echoes established genre conventions around schizophrenia and demonic possession ambiguity. The ending provides some modest payoff for the psychological tension built up, landing slightly above average for the genre.
