Concussion (2015)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A dramatic thriller based on the incredible true David vs. Goliath story of American immigrant Dr. Bennet Omalu, the brilliant forensic neuropathologist who made the first discovery of CTE, a football-related brain trauma, in a pro player and fought for the truth to be known. Omalu's emotional quest puts him at dangerous odds with one of the most powerful institutions in the world.

The Quartile Take

Concussion tackles an important real-world subject — the NFL's suppression of CTE research — with genuine dramatic stakes, but the storytelling is somewhat conventional for a David-vs-Goliath biopic. Will Smith delivers a committed, restrained performance as Dr. Omalu, though the role doesn't fully challenge his range. The supporting cast is solid but underutilized. Cinematography is functional and competent without any distinctive visual language — standard prestige-drama framing. The film earns novelty points for shining a mainstream spotlight on neuropathology and an often-overlooked immigrant scientist's story, though the 'lone hero vs. institution' structure is well-worn. The ending feels anticlimactic, given how unresolved the broader NFL accountability issue remains in reality, leaving the dramatic arc feeling incomplete and somewhat deflating.
