Shut In (2016)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

A widowed child psychologist lives in an isolated existence in rural New England. When caught in a deadly winter storm, she must find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever.

The Quartile Take

Shut In is a formulaic psychological thriller that leans heavily on familiar genre tropes: isolated protagonist, stormy setting, a hidden secret, and a twist that feels more contrived than clever. Naomi Watts delivers a committed performance that elevates the material, and the wintry New England cinematography creates genuine atmosphere. However, the plot mechanics are derivative, borrowing from better films in the genre, and the twist ending feels unearned and logically shaky rather than satisfying. There is little that distinguishes it from dozens of similar thrillers, keeping Novelty low.
