Backtrack (2015)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Troubled psychotherapist Peter Bowers is suffering from nightmares and eerie visions. When he uncovers a horrifying secret that all of his patients share, he is put on a course that takes him back to the small hometown he fled years ago. There he confronts his demons and unravels a mystery 20 years in the making.

The Quartile Take

Backtrack is a competent but derivative supernatural thriller that leans heavily on familiar genre tropes — the haunted protagonist, the twist-reveal about patients being ghosts, and the return-to-hometown mystery are well-worn territory. Adrien Brody brings some credibility to the lead role, elevating material that might otherwise feel entirely routine, but the supporting performances are uneven. Visually the film has some atmospheric moments but nothing that distinguishes it cinematographically. The central mystery, while serviceable, lacks genuine surprise for seasoned horror audiences, and the resolution feels somewhat rushed and predictable. The ending in particular fails to pay off the tension built earlier, landing with a whimper rather than a bang.
