The Duel (2016)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

A Texas Ranger investigates a series of unexplained deaths in a town called Helena.

The Quartile Take

The Duel is a brooding neo-Western that never quite fulfills its atmospheric promise. The plot, centering on a Texas Ranger investigating mysterious deaths in a cult-like town, has intriguing bones but suffers from pacing issues and underdeveloped themes. Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson deliver serviceable performances, with Harrelson's charismatic villain being the clear standout. Cinematography captures the Texas landscape with some style but doesn't distinguish itself beyond competent genre work. The premise blends religious fanaticism with frontier justice in a way that feels more derivative than inventive, recalling better films without adding much new. The ending fails to deliver satisfying payoff, leaving threads unresolved in a way that feels anticlimactic rather than deliberately ambiguous.
