The Quartile Take

Baskin is a viscerally distinctive piece of Turkish horror that earns its cult reputation through sheer audacious imagery and an oppressive, nightmarish atmosphere. The cinematography is genuinely exceptional — drenched in sickly reds and disorienting textures that create a hellscape unlike most Western horror. Its Novelty is high because the film has a singular, unmistakable voice rooted in Turkish folklore and surrealist body horror that sets it apart from genre peers. The acting is serviceable and creditable given the material. However, the plot is thin and largely serves as a delivery mechanism for the descent into carnage, with characterization sacrificed for dread. The ending, while appropriately bleak and circular, leans on time-loop ambiguity in a way that feels slightly undercooked rather than profound.
