Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
A surrogate mother harbors a deadly secret desire for a family of her own with the husband who is expecting to raise her child.
When the Bough Breaks is a fairly formulaic erotic thriller that hits predictable beats: unstable surrogate becomes dangerously obsessed with the prospective father, escalating to a violent confrontation. The plot recycles familiar Fatal Attraction-style territory without meaningful subversion. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall doing what they can with thin material, while Jaz Sinclair's villain performance lacks genuine menace. Cinematography is slick and competent for its budget, making good use of the New Orleans lakehouse setting with some stylish visuals. Novelty is low—the surrogate-obsession thriller premise has been done repeatedly, and this entry adds little distinguishing craft or perspective. The ending resolves in the most expected way possible, offering no surprise or emotional payoff beyond genre formula satisfaction.
