Investigative journalist Eddie Brock attempts a comeback following a scandal, but accidentally becomes the host of Venom, a violent, super powerful alien symbiote. Soon, he must rely on his newfound powers to protect the world from a shadowy organization looking for a symbiote of their own.
Venom (2018) is a tonally inconsistent but oddly charming superhero origin story. The plot is derivative and formulaic, leaning on well-worn beats from the genre without much imagination. Tom Hardy's committed, eccentric performance as Eddie Brock is the film's standout asset, elevating material that would otherwise feel flat. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable, with action sequences that are often murky and chaotic. The symbiote concept and the buddy-comedy dynamic between Eddie and Venom give the film a distinct personality that sets it apart from typical Marvel fare, earning modest novelty points. The ending resolves predictably with a rushed CGI-heavy villain confrontation that fails to capitalize on the film's more interesting character work.
