Viral (2016)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Following the outbreak of a virus that wipes out the majority of the human population, a young woman documents her family's new life in quarantine and tries to protect her infected sister.

The Quartile Take

Viral is a fairly routine entry in the found-footage/quarantine horror subgenre. The premise of a parasitic outbreak threatening a suburban family has been well-trodden, and the film doesn't bring much new to the table in terms of concept or execution. The sisterly relationship at the core provides some emotional grounding and the young leads perform reasonably well, but the script leans on genre clichés and the pacing drags in the middle act. Cinematography is functional at best, with the low-budget aesthetic serving more as a limitation than a stylistic choice. The ending fails to deliver a satisfying payoff, leaving the narrative feeling incomplete. A passable but unremarkable genre entry.
