The Quartile Take

Three... Extremes is a prestigious pan-Asian horror anthology featuring Fruit Chan, Chan-wook Park, and Takashi Miike — three auteurs at distinct creative peaks. The cinematography is exceptional across all three segments, particularly Park's 'Cut' with its surreal, stage-like compositions and Miike's dreamlike 'Box.' Novelty is high because the triptych format showcases three unmistakably singular directorial voices, each with radically different aesthetics and cultural textures. Acting is solid throughout, especially in 'Cut' and 'Dumplings,' though uneven across segments. Plot varies — 'Dumplings' is viscerally provocative, 'Cut' is stylized absurdism, and 'Box' is more opaque. Endings are mixed; 'Box' in particular sacrifices clarity for atmosphere, and 'Dumplings' loses some momentum in its abbreviated form compared to the feature cut.
