A woman discovers that severe catastrophic events are somehow connected to the mental breakdown from which she's suffering.
Colossal is a genuinely singular high-concept genre mashup — using kaiju destruction as a metaphor for alcoholism, toxic relationships, and psychological breakdown. The novelty is undeniable and executed with real conviction. Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis deliver committed performances, with Sudeikis subverting his likable persona effectively as the film darkens. The plot holds together well in its central conceit but wobbles in its third act as the metaphor strains under its own weight. Cinematography is functional and unambitious, serving the story without distinguishing itself. The ending is satisfying in its thematic resolution but feels slightly rushed in execution.
