Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.
The New Mutants attempts an intriguing horror-inflected spin on the X-Men universe, blending superhero genre conventions with a haunted-asylum setting that gives it some genuine distinctiveness. However, the plot is underdeveloped and tonally inconsistent, struggling to fully commit to either horror or superhero beats. The young cast performs capably given the material, and the cinematography creates atmosphere even if it rarely transcends its modest production constraints. The ending resolves too conveniently and fails to deliver the emotional payoff the setup promises, feeling rushed and undercooked after years of production difficulties.
