Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian.

The Quartile Take

Solo is a competent but largely unnecessary origin story that feels like a checklist of fan-service callbacks rather than a genuinely compelling narrative. The plot mechanics are serviceable but predictable, hitting familiar heist-movie beats without much surprise. Alden Ehrenreich does a decent job under impossible expectations of filling Harrison Ford's shoes, and Donald Glover's Lando is a highlight, but the ensemble never quite gels. Cinematography is murky and underlit in many sequences, a noted criticism of the theatrical release. The ending tries for a twist that feels grafted on rather than earned. Novelty is low — this is a by-the-numbers prequel filling in gaps nobody urgently needed filled.
