Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating
Andy moves to New York to work in the fashion industry. Her boss is extremely demanding, cruel and won't let her succeed if she doesn't fit into the high class elegant look of their magazine.
The Devil Wears Prada is elevated almost entirely by Meryl Streep's iconic, glacially commanding performance as Miranda Priestly — a genuine acting masterclass that earns a rare 4. The plot follows a fairly conventional fish-out-of-water arc with predictable beats about identity and ambition, landing solidly average. Cinematography is competent and stylishly dressed but not distinctive. Novelty gets a 3 — the film has a sharp, memorable voice and Streep's portrayal is singular, but the story framework is familiar. The ending is satisfying but somewhat tidy and expected, resolving Andy's arc without much surprise.
