Forsaken (2015)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

John Henry returns to his hometown in hopes of repairing his relationship with his estranged father, but a local gang is terrorizing the town. John Henry is the only one who can stop them, however he has abandoned both his gun and reputation as a fearless quick-draw killer.

The Quartile Take

Forsaken follows a well-worn Western template — the retired gunslinger returning home to face both personal demons and an outlaw gang — without adding meaningful new dimensions to the formula. The father-son dynamic between Kiefer and Donald Sutherland provides some genuine emotional warmth and benefits from their real-life relationship, lifting the acting above average. Cinematography is competent and captures the period atmosphere adequately. However, the plot beats are entirely predictable, hitting every expected mark of the redemption Western, and the ending resolves too neatly without real dramatic surprise. Novelty is low given how closely it adheres to genre conventions without a distinctive voice or fresh perspective.
