After a childhood prank by his brother Angus causes Henry to develop a phobia of sheep, he must step up to the onslaught of a genetically-mutated man-eating flock with the help of his friend and a young environmentalist.
Black Sheep earns its cult status primarily through its sheer singularity — a New Zealand horror-comedy about carnivorous genetically mutated sheep is a genuinely one-of-a-kind premise executed with committed practical effects from WETA Workshop. The plot is serviceable genre fare that delivers on its absurd premise without much depth. Acting is competent and game, with performers leaning into the campy tone appropriately. Cinematography is solid for a low-budget genre outing, capably framing the lush New Zealand pastoral landscapes to contrast with the gore. The ending deflates somewhat, resolving the chaos in a fairly routine fashion without the inventive punch the setup promised.
