The Quartile Take

Blade is a genuinely distinctive entry in late-90s comic book cinema — its urban gothic aesthetic, hard-R vampire action, and Wesley Snipes' charismatic lead helped pioneer the modern superhero film era before it existed as a genre. The concept and execution feel singular for their time, earning high Novelty. Cinematography delivers a moody, stylish look that holds up. The plot is functional but thin — a fairly straightforward revenge/extermination arc. Acting is uneven; Snipes is magnetic but the supporting cast (particularly the villain) is scenery-chewing without much depth. The ending deflates, trading genuine tension for a rushed and underwhelming final confrontation with a CGI-heavy boss fight that feels below the rest of the film's craft.
