The true story of the 1973 tennis match between world number one Billie Jean King and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs.
Battle of the Sexes benefits enormously from two committed lead performances — Emma Stone and Steve Carell both fully inhabit their roles, with Stone particularly impressive conveying King's internal conflict around her sexuality alongside her public battle for equality. The film captures the 1970s period with solid production design and warm cinematography that complements the era. However, the story follows a fairly conventional sports-biopic structure with few surprises in how it frames the narrative arc, and anyone familiar with the historical outcome will find little tension in the climactic match. The dual storyline — King's romance with Marilyn Barnett running alongside the Riggs circus — is handled competently but unevenly. The ending delivers satisfying closure without transcending the genre's familiar beats.
