The Limehouse Golem (2016)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A series of murders has shaken the community to the point where people believe that only a legendary creature from dark times – the mythical Golem – must be responsible.

The Quartile Take

The Limehouse Golem is a competent and atmospheric Victorian-era mystery thriller elevated significantly by its performances, particularly Bill Nighy and Olivia Cooke. The plot is engaging with clever flashback-driven structure and courtroom drama, though it relies on somewhat familiar serial killer mystery tropes and the Golem premise is more backdrop than genuine horror. The cinematography captures period London adequately but without exceptional distinction. The film's blend of music hall theatrics, gender-bending characters, and gaslit murder mystery gives it moderate distinctiveness within the genre. The ending delivers a reasonably satisfying twist but feels slightly rushed in its resolution.
