The Quartile Take

Asghar Farhadi's 'About Elly' is a masterclass in slow-burn dramatic tension, using the disappearance of a woman to expose the lies, social codes, and moral evasions of middle-class Iranian society. The plot is exceptionally constructed — a simple premise that spirals into devastating moral complexity, with each revelation recontextualizing what came before. The ensemble acting is uniformly excellent, with naturalistic performances that make the group dynamics feel genuinely lived-in before catastrophe strikes. Cinematography is handheld and observational, effective but not particularly distinctive. Novelty is high — Farhadi's specific blend of social realism, thriller mechanics, and moral inquiry applied to Iranian bourgeois life is unmistakably singular. The ending is powerful but slightly diffuse, leaving threads unresolved in ways that feel intentional but mildly unsatisfying compared to the taut buildup.
