Owen Thursday sees his new posting to the desolate Fort Apache as a chance to claim the military honour which he believes is rightfully his. Arrogant, obsessed with military form and ultimately self-destructive, he attempts to destroy the Apache chief Cochise after luring him across the border from Mexico, against the advice of his subordinates.

Fort Apache is one of John Ford's finest Westerns and a genuinely revisionist work for its era. The plot is uncommonly sophisticated, centering on a vainglorious, Custer-like colonel (Henry Fonda) whose rigid arrogance leads to catastrophe — a sharp critique of military myth-making that Ford then complicates with the famous ending, which questions how history sanitizes its failures. The cinematography, shot in Monument Valley by Archie Stout, is visually stunning with Ford's trademark compositions of vast landscapes and cavalry pageantry. The ending is particularly bold and thematically rich, refusing easy resolution. Acting is strong across the board — Fonda is icily compelling and John Wayne anchors the moral center — though some supporting performances are uneven. Novelty is solid for its period; the film's willingness to sympathize with the Apache and critique its own hero was genuinely ahead of its time, though it still operates within the Western genre framework Ford himself helped define.
