Moonlight (2016)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

The tender, heartbreaking story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality.

The Quartile Take

Moonlight is a landmark of American cinema — Barry Jenkins' triptych structure, intimate cinematography by James Laxton, and Nicholas Britell's score create something genuinely singular. The performances across all three chapters (Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Trevante Rhodes) are exceptional. The film's fragmented, lyrical approach to Black queer identity in Miami is wholly distinctive and earned its Best Picture win on merit. The ending, while emotionally resonant, is deliberately understated and ambiguous — beautiful but slightly less conclusive than the extraordinary buildup warrants, keeping it from a 4.
