The Quartile Take

Rain Man is anchored by Dustin Hoffman's iconic, meticulously researched performance as Raymond Babbitt, earning a well-deserved 4 for Acting — one of the most celebrated screen portrayals of autism/savant syndrome. The plot is a competent but somewhat formulaic road-trip redemption arc; the emotional beats are earned but predictable, landing at a solid 3. Cinematography by John Seale is polished and professional without being visually distinctive. Novelty earns a 3 — the film brought savant syndrome into mainstream consciousness in a way few films had, but structurally it follows a well-worn buddy/road-trip template. The ending is emotionally satisfying but restrained and somewhat ambiguous, fitting for the story but not especially striking.
