I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

In a small Midwestern town, a troubled teen with homicidal tendencies must hunt down and destroy a supernatural killer while keeping his own inner demons at bay.

The Quartile Take

I Am Not a Serial Killer is a genuinely distinctive genre hybrid — blending coming-of-age character study with small-town supernatural horror in a way that feels singular. The cold Minnesota setting is beautifully rendered with a grainy, desaturated aesthetic that gives the film real atmosphere. Christopher Lloyd delivers a surprisingly nuanced and unsettling performance, and Max Records is compelling as the troubled teen protagonist. The plot is engaging in its early stages but the supernatural revelation somewhat undercuts the grounded psychological tension built up in the first act, and the ending feels abrupt and underdeveloped. The film's greatest strength is its tonal distinctiveness — it occupies a niche that few films share.
