A modern-day take on the "Beauty and the Beast" tale where a New York teen is transformed into a hideous monster in order to find true love.
Beastly is a competent but unremarkable YA adaptation of Beauty and the Beast set in modern New York. The plot follows the fairy tale formula closely with few surprises, the acting from the young cast is serviceable but unimpressive, the cinematography is glossy but generic, and while the modern setting offers some novelty it doesn't bring enough originality to distinguish itself from countless other teen romance adaptations. The ending resolves predictably and without much emotional payoff.
