Hostiles (2017)

A legendary Native American-hating Army captain nearing retirement in 1892 is given one last assignment: to escort a Cheyenne chief and his family through dangerous territory back to his Montana reservation.

The Quartile Take

Hostiles is a handsomely mounted, morally serious Western elevated by exceptional performances — Christian Bale delivers a career-best restraint, and Rosamund Pike is devastating — and stunning widescreen cinematography that captures the brutal beauty of the frontier. The plot follows a familiar redemption-through-journey arc and doesn't fully escape Western genre conventions, though it engages them with genuine weight and ambiguity. Its novelty lies more in its somber, unromantic tone and unflinching reckoning with colonial violence than in structural originality. The ending is earnest but slightly abrupt, leaving some emotional threads unresolved in ways that feel more deflating than purposefully open.
