I, Tonya (2017)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

Competitive ice skater Tonya Harding rises amongst the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but her future in the sport is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband intervenes.

The Quartile Take

I, Tonya stands out for its fractured, unreliable-narrator structure and mockumentary framing, giving it genuine novelty in the biopic space. Margot Robbie and Allison Janney deliver career-highlight performances — Janney's turn as LaVona Golden is one of the decade's great supporting performances, earning a well-above-average acting score. The cinematography is competent and energetic, particularly in the skating sequences, but doesn't transcend its functional role. The plot benefits from an inherently compelling true story but the narrative juggling of timelines can feel slightly uneven. The ending, while emotionally resonant, is somewhat abrupt and leans heavily on title cards rather than dramatic resolution, slightly undercutting the film's momentum.
