In a 19th-century European village, a young man about to be married is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious corpse bride, while his real bride waits bereft in the land of the living.
Corpse Bride is a visually stunning stop-motion film from Tim Burton and Mike Johnson, featuring beautiful dark-fantasy aesthetics and intricate puppet animation that earned it an Oscar nomination. The contrast between the muted living world and the vibrant underworld is cinematographically exceptional. However, the plot is relatively thin and straightforward for a feature-length film, with character development feeling rushed. The voice cast (Depp, Bonham Carter, Bonham Carter) performs competently but the material doesn't demand much range. While the stop-motion craft is distinctive, the overall conception feels like a companion piece to The Nightmare Before Christmas rather than a fully original vision. The ending resolves neatly and emotionally but is somewhat predictable.
