Cult of Chucky (2017)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica is wrongly convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family... until a string of grisly deaths occur after her psychiatrist introduces a new group therapy tool -- a "Good Guy" doll.

The Quartile Take

Cult of Chucky earns modest marks overall. The plot is serviceable but convoluted, leaning heavily on franchise lore and struggling to balance multiple storylines coherently. Acting is inconsistent — Brad Dourif remains reliably menacing as Chucky's voice, and Fiona Dourif brings genuine commitment to Nica, but supporting performances are uneven. Cinematography is a relative highlight: the sterile, cold asylum setting is used effectively, with some stylish framing and decent practical effects work. Novelty gets a bump for the genuinely interesting concept of multiple Chucky dolls and the asylum setting, which freshens the long-running franchise more than most late sequels manage, though it still operates within well-worn slasher conventions. The ending is surprisingly ambitious — setting up future installments with a bold tonal shift — though it may frustrate viewers seeking closure.
