Twenty years after a Valentine's Day tragedy claimed the lives of five miners, Harry Warden returns for a vengeful massacre among teen sweethearts gearing up for another party.
My Bloody Valentine is a solid entry in the early 80s slasher cycle with a genuinely atmospheric setting — the coal mine provides a claustrophobic, gritty backdrop that distinguishes it from its peers. The Valentine's Day holiday horror hook and the mining town milieu give it a distinctive identity within the slasher genre. The plot follows genre conventions but layers in some effective mystery around the killer's identity. Acting is functional but largely unremarkable, as is typical for the subgenre. The cinematography makes good use of the dark mine tunnels to generate dread. The ending delivers a suitably chilling final moment. Overall a respectable, atmospheric Canadian slasher with more personality than average but not transcendent in any single dimension.
