Mute (2018)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A mute man with a violent past is forced to take on the teeming underworld of a near-future Berlin as he searches for his missing girlfriend.

The Quartile Take

Mute promised an ambitious neo-noir cyberpunk world but delivered a muddled, overly convoluted narrative that failed to cohesively tie its dual storylines together. The Berlin setting and production design showed visual ambition, though execution was inconsistent. Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux offered committed if uneven performances, but the mute protagonist left little room for dramatic engagement. The cyberpunk aesthetic borrowed heavily from Blade Runner without adding much distinctiveness, and the ending felt abrupt and unsatisfying, leaving multiple plot threads unresolved. A disappointment given director Duncan Jones's earlier work.
