A college student starts to experience extreme seizures. She soon learns that the violent episodes are a symptom of inexplicable abilities.
Thelma is a beautifully crafted Norwegian supernatural thriller from Joachim Trier, elevated significantly by Eili Harboe's raw, compelling lead performance and Kasper Tuxen's stunning, cold Scandinavian cinematography. The story of repressed sexuality and religious guilt manifesting as telekinetic power is well-executed but draws heavily on familiar Carrie-esque territory, keeping Novelty middling. The plot is atmospheric and deliberate but occasionally slow and underdeveloped in its middle stretch. The ending resolves effectively but not memorably. Acting and Cinematography are the film's genuine standouts.
