It's 1943 and World War II is raging in Europe. In New York, Arturo and Flora the daughter of a restaurant owner are in love, but she is promised in marriage to the son of a Mafia boss. There is a way around this, but to be able to marry Flora, Arturo needs to get permission from her father, who lives in a village in Sicily. Arturo doesn't have any money, so the only way he can get to Sicily is to enlist in the U.S. Army, which is preparing for a landing on the island.

The Quartile Take

At War for Love is a light Italian-American wartime romantic comedy with a charming premise but a fairly conventional execution. The plot blends wartime adventure with a familiar star-crossed lovers setup, competently handled but not especially surprising. The acting is solid within the genre's expectations — warm and energetic without being particularly distinguished. Cinematography is functional and period-appropriate without standout visual ambition. The concept of a man enlisting in WWII just to reach Sicily and win a father's blessing is a fun hook, but the film largely follows predictable romantic comedy beats without a distinctly original voice. The ending resolves in the expected feel-good fashion typical of the genre.
