Bird Box (2018)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a survivor and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety.

The Quartile Take

Bird Box builds reasonable tension from its core hook—an unseen, perception-based threat—and Sandra Bullock anchors the film with a committed performance. The dual timeline structure keeps momentum but the screenplay leans on familiar post-apocalyptic tropes and never fully exploits its intriguing premise. Visually the film is functional but flat, shot with little stylistic ambition for a horror-thriller of its scope. The ending resolves too conveniently and sentimentally, undercutting the bleak tension cultivated throughout. Novelty gets a modest bump for its distinctive sensory conceit, though the execution doesn't fully capitalize on what makes the idea singular.
