A young Englishman plots revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin, believing that she murdered his guardian. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms.
My Cousin Rachel is a handsome, well-acted adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel, elevated by Rachel Weisz's commanding, ambiguous performance and Sam Claflin's credibly tortured naivety. The Cornish landscapes are gorgeously photographed, giving the film a brooding gothic atmosphere. However, as a remake of an already well-known novel adaptation, its novelty is limited, and the deliberately unresolved ending — while faithful to du Maurier's intent — leaves many viewers frustrated rather than intrigued. The plot itself, while atmospherically executed, is somewhat thin as a thriller and relies heavily on mood over narrative momentum.
