Terrifier (2018)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A maniacal clown named Art terrorizes three young women on Halloween night and everyone else who stands in his way.

The Quartile Take

Terrifier is a lean, mean slasher built almost entirely around its central villain and its extreme gore set-pieces rather than narrative substance. Art the Clown is a genuinely distinctive and unsettling creation — silent, expressive, and deeply unnerving — giving the film real novelty within the crowded slasher genre. The cinematography competently serves the grimy, practical-effects-driven aesthetic. However, the plot is razor-thin even by slasher standards, functioning mostly as a delivery mechanism for kills, and the acting from the supporting cast is noticeably weak. The ending feels abrupt and unresolved, leaning on shock value rather than satisfying closure. A cult film that earns its reputation for nastiness and Art's iconography more than any narrative craft.
